Flying In, or out of Bali on 31 December 2023? Road Closures Due to New Years Eve Fireworks

Based on previous years, we have put together some information to help plan your flight in or flight out of Bali on NYE, especially, if you are staying inn Kuta, Legian or Uluwatu area.  Once the police put out their official map (which won’t be until a week prior to NYE) we will update this, but we thought it helpful for tourists to have this information sooner, rather than later.

Or, this may be helpful if you were just planning to visit the Kuta beach area. Or staying in the Kuta beach or Uluwatu area on New Year’s Eve.

On the afternoon of 31 December 2023 starting from 3.00pm the following road closures will occur (until 6.00am 1 January 2023) Note, in previous years, this has meant all cars are not allowed to enter, but there has been some leniency for some motorbikes to pass through until 4pm (but not park, only for pick up or drop off)

  • Jalan Pantai Kuta will be closed for all vehicles from 3.00pm
  • Jalan Legian from Jalan Patimura intersection down to Bemo corner (Jalan Pantai Kuta) will be closed for all vehicles from 3.00pm
  • Jalan Melasti from the Beach will be closed for all vehicles from 3.00pm, traffic will not be able to enter Jalan Melasti.
  • Jalan Uluwatu is closed from Ungasan (Nirmala Superarket to Jalan Raya Kampus Unud (fuel station) starting from 3pm

The following traffic diversions will occur during this time

  1. Jalan Patih Jelantik - Jalan Legian (Made in Bali Store) intersection traffic direction towards Ground Zero will be closed and all traffic must turn right up Jalan Legian Kaja towards Jalan Raya Seminyak
  2. Jalan Legian – Jalan Patimura intersection, traffic coming out of Jalan Benesari will also be diverted to the north to Jalan Patimura.
  3. Jalan Mataram – Jalan Patimura intersection – from Jalan Matarm onto Jalan Patimura the road is closed to Kuta, and traffic is diverted to the right towards Jalan Majapahit
  4. Jalan Raya Kuta – Jalan Setia budi intersection, traffic flow to Kuta is closed and diverted to Jalan Setia Budi.
  5. Jalan Bemo Corner intersection, the flow towards the beach is closed and diverted to the east towards Jalan Raya Kuta, and people heading to Kuta Beach are encouraged to park at Kuta Central Park (Sentra Parkir Kuta) or at the designated parking office and then walk to the beach.
  6. Jalan Raya Kuta – Jalan Bakung Sari intersection, all traffic flow to the beach will be closed and diverted north to Jalan Pantai Kuta and can only turn right in the opposite direction of the beach
  7. Kuta Art Market intersection - traffic from Jalan Kartika Plaza towards Kuta Beach will be closed and diverted to Jalan Tegal Wangi.
  8. Jalan Patih Jelantik – Jalan Dewi Sri intersection, traffic flow will be open and closed by the police when required to help reduce congestion in the Kuta area, starting from 2:00pm
  9. Jalan Uluwatu from the direction of Uluwatu towards GWK is closed from the Nirmala Supermarket intersection, and vehicles are diverted eastward to Jalan Pura Batu Pageh up to Jalan Darmawangsa
  10. Jalan Uluwatu from GWK to the east is closed from the Udayana University intersection (Jalan Raya Kampus Unud) , and vehicles are diverted north to Simpang Kali.

These traffic diversions will put a large strain on the following roads, expect long delays:

  • Jalan Padma Utara area, Legian
  • Jalan Raya Legian heading north to Seminyak
  • Sunset Road from the Bali Mall Galeria all the way to Jalan Nakula, Seminyak
  • Jalan Kartika Plaza, Tuban
  • Jalan Uluwatu Jimbaran
  • Jalan Uluwatu Pecatu

FROM THE AIRPORT

Other high traffic areas will be found around the airport due to the number of local visitors due to land/depart on that date.  Allow plenty of time if you have a flight out that afternoon.  If you are flying in to Bali, get a cab from the airport, as many drivers will not want to wait for you after 3pm as they will get stuck in traffic and want to get home to the families….or to the beach themselves with their families.

So, Heading to Kuta? Well, a lot of people will be walking, so get your wheels checked on your suitcases, bring a hat and make sure you stop to buy water…

Heading to Sanur?   Use the toll road (you may need to pay your taxi/driver extra if not quoted), prepare for at least 30 minutes (to even 1 hour if between 4pm and midnight)  to get out of the carpark of the airport onto the toll (1 km), but once on the toll it will be smoother.

Heading to Ubud?  Use the toll to get past the Kuta area

Heading to Nusa Dua? -  Use the toll, as it will get you there in 10 minutes (once you get on the toll)

Heading to Uluwatu/Ungasan - Again, use the toll, it is the long way round, but it will actually save you time in travel, you will go through Nusa Dua village (not resorts) and come in the back way…you can even stop in Nusa Dua for some snacks at the supermarkets. Jalan Uluwatu will be closed from 4pm in front of GWK, so expext delays. Staying in a hotel off that road bewteen Ungasan Nirmala Supermarket and the fuel station near the University you will need to ask your hotel for any back access roads.

Heading to Jimbaran?  So, close, but so far…Just expect a traffic jam, it will move, but slowly, but some snacks at the Mini mart at the airport as not many places to stop and your driver wont want to stop anyway.
