The Bukit

The Bukit

You could really say that surfers discovered this area. It's dry landscape and sandstone cliffs make some beaches adventure hideaways.

The Bukit means 'Hill' and many of the amazing beaches in this area involve a jungle trek and some stairs. However, don't be discouraged there are some beaches set up for tourists, where they have carved an access road out of the cliffs, such as Pandawa Beach and Melasti Beach.

There are a lot of beach clubs that you need a driver to take you to, but so worth a day just hanging out with the groovy people.  Or, you could hang out with the locals in some of the beach bars on Melasti Beach for half the price...okay, make that half and then half again

Where is The Bukit?

The Bukit Peninsula is southernmost point of Bali, south of the airport.

The Bukit (as it is commonly referred to) includes a number of Bali's very best beaches including Balangan, Padang Padang, and the top surfing spots on the island.

How to get there?

The Bukit is not that far from the airport, however as many places are spread along the Coast, or even inland such as the village of Ungasan, which has supermarkets and many facilities.

If you are visiting for the day it's best to book a driver as many places are far apart, so hailing a taxi is not always possible. The famous GWK (Cultural Park) is on the way up the hill so maybe a stop here on the way to the beach.

Where to Stay?

If you want to stay in the area, arrange transport with your accommodation. It is very hard to find transport in this area, unless you are in a main village like Ungasan, which is not on the beach. Ungasan is however a great base, if you find accommodation near Jalan Uluwatu you can walk to restaurants and get a cheap Gojek or Grab to the beach and to the Beach Clubs

Uluwatu?

Although Uluwatu is on the Bukit, it probably deserves its own page, as some tourists mistake Uluwatu for other areas, and are a little surprised when they arrive, only to find, everything is hard to find, and you need your own transport, which is even harder to find
