If you did not use the egates and you have a sticker in your passport, you may need a visit to immigration to renew your visa

How to Renew the Visa on Arrival (VOA) at an Immigration office

VOA (visa on arrival) is currently 500,000 IDR, payable at the Bali airport and this gives you 30 days in Indonesia, well, 29 really, as they always count the day you arrive.  We have detailed the steps for you, and a few things to consider:

The VOA can be extended once only for a further 30 days, at an immigration office in Bali (not the airport), you can go yourself (three times).  You cannot transfer to any other visa with the VOA, you cannot extend a 2nd time (you can stay with renewal a maximum 60 days in Indonesia)

  1. You cannot renew the VOA until you have been in Indonesia for at least 14 days.

  2. You will need to be dressed appropriately, there is a dress code.

  3. You will need to hand over your original passport and be without your passport for approximately 3 days.

  4. You will need your paid flight ticket out of Indonesia printed (it needs an e-ticket number).

*You do need to check National Public Holidays, immigration sometimes closes for 1 week and will not process any visas during that time (if your passport is already at their office, they will not return it until the next working day)

Immigration offices in Bali are located in the following locations (you must go to the same location for each visit)

  1. Nusa Dua (South Bali) – Jl. Taman Jimbaran no.1, Mumbul, Kuta Selatan, District Nusa Dua, Bali.

  2. Renon (Denpasar, Southeast Bali) – Jl. D.I. Pandjaitan No.3, Dangin Puri Klod, Denpasar Timur, Bali.

  3. Singaraja (North Bali) – Jl. Seririt, Desa Pemaron, Singaraja, Kec. Buleleng, Bali.

THE STEPS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

DOING IT YOURSELF SAVES YOU MONEY...IF YOU HAVE THE TIME

STEP 1. - PREPARE DOCUMENTS

Take photocopies of

1. your passport biodata page,

2. your passport page with your VOA sticker in it

3. Your flight ticket

Some offices want to see your boarding pass as well.

STEP 2 - APPOINTMENT/TICKET

You can arrive early and take a ticket (get there at 8.00am) or you can make an appointment

You can make an appointment to visit an immigration office.  You must visit an office a Minimum of 7 days prior to visa expiring (not open on weekends or public holidays – In Bali check local public holidays as well).

Ngurah Rai (Nusa Dua) Reservation Immigration Appointment for VOA Renewal for an appointment the next working day (note, they only take about 50 a day, so get in quick

Denpasar (Renon) Visit Reservation Immigration Appointment for VOA renewal for an appointment the next working day.

Singaraja (North Bali) Visit their website for updated information, currently no appointment needed

STEP 3. - FIRST VISIT

Remember to visit the Immigration office in the morning before 12 noon, ideally at 8:00 am. Be sure to bring photocopies of your passport, VOA visa stamp, and airline ticket, as well as a black pen as they don't provide one. You can get the required form, PERDIM 23, at the counter when you arrive and fill it out with a black pen. If you prefer, you can download the form online. Remember to fill out a separate form for each person, including children.

STEP 4. NOTE, UPDATE 30 July 2024 – some Immigration Offices will now allow you to have your photo taken on the first visit, saving an extra visit

They will give you a date and time to come back to have your fingerprints and photos taken.  You will be given a payment slip, you need to then go to a local bank or Post Office to pay for the extension.

STEP 5.SECOND VISIT  - some Immigration Offices will now allow you to have your photo taken on the same day as applying, saving an extra visit

Photo and Fingerprint - Go back on the date as per the slip in the morning before 11 am (photos will not be taken after 11 am), best to get there at 8 am, and make sure you have dressed appropriately for a photo (no tank tops, no bare shoulders/neat hair). This takes the longest time, you will wait for a few hours (make sure you get a ticket for a photo). You must go on the date they give you, you cannot go the next day.

STEP 6. THIRD VISIT  (Or may be second visit if you are lucky)

Passport Collection - Return on the date indicated on the slip provided to collect your passport. You can only collect your passport between 2pm and 3pm. If you are unable to go on the specified date, you can collect it the following working day. There is a separate locket for Passport collection and you do not need a ticket, but you must bring your proof of payment and the invoice that Immigration gave you to collect your passport.

OUR TIPS

Be prepared for a long wait, often the systems crash, and you may be required to go back the next day if this happens, so don’t plan anything important for the next day. This year the system has gone down twice for longer than 4 days.

Pack suitable clothing to wear - there is a dress code: no shorts, no tank tops, no midriff tops, no flip flops.

Get there early, they open at 8.00 am. Get a ticket from the machine when you walk in (next to the counter as you enter) - make sure you take 1 ticket per person, including children.

If you visit the Ngurah Rai immigration office, there is a photocopy place next door if you forget to copy something - go out of the driveway, it's on the right.

Be aware some local banks do not allow you to pay the immigration fees unless you show your passport (which is silly, as you gave it to Immigration), so make sure you have colour photocopies of your passport and show the bank the slip is from immigration and explain that they have your passport.

When you finally collect your passport check your visa stamp before you leave immigration, sometimes they make a mistake.

Triple check public holidays, as Immigration will not give you back your passport on a public holiday, even if you have a flight. Bali has extra public holidays for religious ceremonies.

Immigration Officers are very friendly and helpful but have patience.

OUR BIGGEST TIP: Do not hand your passport over to an "agent" who does not have a physical office. Check Google Maps Street View to see their office, as many unsuspecting tourists have never seen their money or their passports again, by just trusting some Instagram ad.
